Two MCD officials suspended after building collapse in Old Delhi kills two
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi suspended an assistant engineer and a junior engineer following a three-storey building collapse in Chawri Bazaar.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended an assistant engineer and a junior engineer on Thursday after an under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazaar. According to reports from Mint and The Pioneer, the collapse in Gali Sitara near the Chawri Bazaar metro station resulted in two deaths and left four people injured.
The suspended officials were identified as Assistant Engineer Mohd Naeem and Junior Engineer Aman Dalal. The Deputy Commissioner of the Old Delhi Zone placed them under suspension for alleged severe dereliction of duty, pending further inquiry. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered against the contractor, according to Scroll.
A senior MCD official told ANI that the three-storey building was being constructed on a 50-square-metre plot without a sanctioned building plan. The official stated that construction had been halted about 15 days ago and the collapse occurred while workers were removing the roof's support system. The official added that the material used was non-engineered and had not set properly.
Local residents reported hearing a loud noise around 9.35 am when the structure fell. While some reports indicated four people were injured, a Delhi Fire Services official told PTI that at least 15 persons were feared trapped under the debris during the rescue operations.
