Naga groups demand permanent political solution to Manipur crisis

Organisations held rallies in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts to seek the withdrawal of Assam Rifles and an end to alleged proxy warfare.

Naga organisations held simultaneous rallies in Manipur’s Ukhrul and Kamjong districts on Thursday to demand a permanent political solution to the state's crisis, according to The New Indian Express and The Sentinel.

The protests were organised by Tangkhul Naga organisations under the United Naga Council (UNC), which is the apex Naga body in Manipur. In Ukhrul, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and Tangkhul Frontal Organisation participated in the rally, which disrupted normal life as shops and transport remained closed.

In a joint memorandum, the organisations sought intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They alleged that the conflict is rooted in historical demographic distortions caused by Kuki refugee and immigration policies, claiming Kuki villages in Manipur increased from 73 in 1881 to 1,878 presently.

The groups accused Kuki rebels of killings, abductions, and arson attacks on Naga civilians. The memorandum stated that more than 32 Naga civilians have been killed, including the recovery of six mutilated bodies of Liangmai Nagas on June 10, 2026, and the murder of Ajinbou Ringkangmai on October 10, 2026.

Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) president Ramreichan Keishing accused Kuki groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement of hostilities against the Naga community. Keishing also alleged that the Assam Rifles failed to maintain neutrality.

The organisations demanded the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Naga areas, the revocation of the SoO agreement, and the repatriation of Kuki refugees and alleged illegal immigrants. They also urged the Centre not to grant any separate homeland or administrative arrangement to the Kukis.
