Delhi forensic laboratory case pendency drops by 79 per cent in one year

The Delhi government reported that pending examinations at the Forensic Science Laboratory fell from approximately 27,000 to 5,700 cases.

The number of cases awaiting examination at the Delhi Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has decreased from about 27,000 to 5,700 in roughly one year, according to a statement from the Delhi government on Wednesday. The Indian Express reported that this represents a 78.88 per cent drop in pendency.

Home Minister Ashish Sood attributed the decline to various administrative and operational measures. Sood said the reduction is a major step toward ensuring faster criminal justice delivery in the capital and stated that the administration is committed to ensuring science and speed work together to serve citizens.

To strengthen forensic infrastructure, the Delhi government has approved a new Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) at Sheikh Sarai. The project, costing Rs 151.80 crore, aims to increase evidence examination capacity and reduce the burden on the primary FSL in Rohini.

The government is also planning to upgrade existing facilities and set up specialised laboratories to house advanced scientific equipment. New digital tools and machinery have been deployed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of examinations.

The Home Minister’s Office said vacant regular posts are being filled to address staff shortages. Additionally, the tenure of technical staff and contractual employees has been extended to maintain laboratory functions.
