Waterlogging persists in coastal Andhra Pradesh districts after heavy rains
Officials are using pump sets to drain rainwater and sewage from flooded low-lying areas and towns across the state.
Low-lying areas and roads in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh remain waterlogged on Thursday, despite a break from four days of heavy rainfall, according to the Deccan Chronicle.
In West Godavari district, water from the Gostani Canal is overflowing onto the road in Tanuku, making travel difficult for commuters. District Collector C. Nagarani inspected the area and instructed municipal officials to monitor the situation and take precautionary measures.
In Konaseema district, officials have begun de-silting the 10.235-km Kunavaram-Gachikayalapora drain. Konaseema district collector R. Mahesh Kumar said 2.6 km of the drain has been cleared, along with 600 metres near the Moga outlet, to reduce flooding risks.
Irrigation officials have released 20,000 cusecs of water downstream from the Sri Karatham Krishnamurthy Yerrakalva Reservoir in Jangareddygudem mandal. The reservoir currently holds nearly 3.8 TMC of its 4.426 TMC total capacity following inflows from Khammam and Bhadrachalam.
East Godavari district collector Keerthi Chekuri has advised residents in the Yerrakalva catchment area, including Nidadavolu and Tadepalligudem, to remain vigilant. She also told farmers in low-lying areas to take precautions as fields could be submerged.
In Kakinada, rainwater is stagnant on Government Hospital Road, Shantinagar, Sambamurthy Nagar, and ZP Centre. Municipal commissioner N.V.V. Satyanarayana said efforts are underway to drain the water and improve sanitation.
