Tripura poised to lead Northeast export growth via trade agreements

The state can leverage its proximity to international borders and a base of 3.7 lakh MSMEs to boost economic growth, says Joint Secretary.

Tripura is positioned to lead export-oriented growth in the Northeast by using new-generation Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), according to Tripura Star News. The announcement was made by Ministry of Commerce and Industry Joint Secretary C. Vanlalramsanga during a state-level outreach programme at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala on November 4, 2026.

The programme, titled 'Leveraging Free Trade Agreements', was organised by the Department of Commerce through the Regional Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Kolkata, and the Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Tripura. It aims to help local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) access cross-border trade opportunities.

Vanlalramsanga stated that Tripura's strategic proximity to international borders and its entrepreneurial MSME base allow the state to connect locally produced goods with global markets. He noted that Tripura has approximately 3.7 lakh MSMEs and a population of around 43 lakh. The state exported goods worth approximately USD 15 million during the last financial year.

The Joint Secretary said the Central Government is simplifying commercial regulations under its Ease of Doing Business framework and digitising trade processes. He added that a district-wise mapping of products is being conducted to identify high-potential exportable items from every district.

Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, Tripura, Kiran Gitte, outlined the infrastructural support, financial incentives, and capacity-building measures being provided to MSMEs. The event also included technical sessions featuring trade experts from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
