Six dead as two more bodies recovered from Uttarakhand trekking route

Rescue teams found two more bodies on Thursday, bringing the total death toll to six following an avalanche in Uttarkashi district.

Rescue teams recovered two more bodies from the avalanche-hit Kedartal trekking route in Uttarkashi district on Thursday, November 5, 2026, according to The Hindu. This brings the total number of bodies recovered to six following the incident that saw eight people go missing.

The two bodies found on Thursday were recovered from different locations by a joint team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). The District Emergency Operations Centre, Uttarkashi, stated that two people remain missing from the original group of eight.

The bodies recovered on Wednesday, November 4, were identified by family members as Rintu Mondol, 40, and Uday Ghosh, 30. Both men were residents of the Bankura district in West Bengal.

The expedition, consisting of 13 people, left Gangotri on October 27 for a three-day trek. The group included seven trekkers, a local guide, and five support staff. While four support staff were rescued near Kachchi Dhang on October 31, eight others were caught in heavy snowfall and multiple avalanches.

Search operations have been hampered by difficult terrain and snow accumulation of 10 to 12 feet. A 10-member SDRF and NIM team has been conducting searches at Kedarkhadak.

Officials stated that the bodies recovered on Thursday would be airlifted to the Matli helipad on Friday. A further search operation by the joint SDRF-NIM team is scheduled for Friday.
