Kudumbashree's Kerala Chicken to expand operations to Idukki district
The venture aims for a total sales turnover of ₹200 crore this year as it enters its final district of operation.
The Kudumbashree venture Kerala Chicken is set to begin operations in Idukki during the second week of the month, according to The Hindu. Idukki is the only district in the state where the project has not yet established a presence.
The enterprise, which aims for a total sales turnover of ₹200 crore this year, currently includes 547 farms across the state. Thiruvananthapuram has the highest number of farms at 75, followed by Kottayam with 67. There are 172 Kerala Chicken outlets in total, with Ernakulam having the most at 29.
Kudumbashree officials stated that the venture integrates production, processing, and marketing. The organisation provides chicks, feed, and medicines to women entrepreneurs, then collects the grown chicken to ensure safe-to-eat products at affordable prices. Beneficiaries can earn an average income of ₹1 lakh, with a maximum income of ₹2.5 lakh for those rearing 10,000 chicks within 45 days.
The project uses a traceability system where customers can scan QR codes on value-added product packs, such as chicken drumsticks and boneless breast, to trace the origin of the meat. Since 2019, the Kerala Chicken sales turnover has reached ₹597.22 crore.
S. Shanavas, State Programme Officer for Kudumbashree’s Farm Livelihood vertical, said the next goal is to become the biggest farmer producer company in the country.
