Uttar Pradesh economy did not triple under Yogi Adityanath, data shows
The state's GSDP and per-capita income fell short of the tripling claims made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, according to The Federal.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claimed on October 2 in Lucknow that the state's economy, per-capita income, and budget size have all tripled since he took office on March 19, 2017. However, data shows these figures have not reached that level, reported The Federal.
The state's GSDP was Rs 12.89 lakh crore in 2016-17 at current prices. By 2025-26, the budget figure for GSDP is Rs 30.8 lakh crore at current prices. Had the economy tripled, it would have reached Rs 38.67 lakh crore.
Per-capita income also did not meet the claimed tripling. The estimated per-capita income for 2025-26 was Rs 1,20,000, whereas a tripling from 2016-17 levels would have required it to reach Rs 1,48,023.
Regarding per-capita GSDP, Uttar Pradesh's figure for 2025-26 was Rs 1.16 lakh. This is lower than Tamil Nadu at Rs 3.62 lakh, Gujarat at Rs 3.37 lakh, and Maharashtra at Rs 3.19 lakh.
Adityanath also cited a rise in female workforce participation from 12% to over 36%. On crime, cognizable crime incidents rose from 5,61,605 in 2016 to 7,93,000 in 2023, before falling to 4,30,552 in 2024.
The Chief Minister also claimed large factories grew from 14,000 to 35,000. However, a Business Standard report stated the factory tally in the state jumped 17% to cross the 32,000 mark.
