Nine arrested after mob attacks BSF personnel in Tripura
The assault occurred in Sepahijala district following the apprehension of a suspected smuggler near the international border.
Nine people, including three women, have been arrested for allegedly attacking Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Monday, according to The Pioneer and Telangana Today.
The incident took place near the Ashabari Border Outpost under the 49th Battalion. Police said the confrontation began after BSF personnel apprehended an Indian man suspected of illegal cross-border trade, while others allegedly fled the scene.
A mob then blocked the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road and attacked a BSF vehicle with sticks and bamboo. Company Commander Rohit and two other personnel sustained injuries during the assault, and one of the attackers was also injured.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and a matter of grave concern. He directed authorities to take swift and stringent action against those responsible.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also condemned the violence but accused the state government of failing to prevent cross-border smuggling.
Following the clash, the district administration has initiated land verification and demarcation exercises near the Ashabari Border Outpost. According to ANI, a joint team of police, BSF, and revenue officials visited the area on Thursday to examine ownership documents amid concerns over illegal occupation of government land.
