Odisha Vigilance officials apprehended Sujit Kumar Mohanta after he allegedly attempted to flee into a pond to avoid arrest.
Odisha Vigilance officials arrested former Sub-Inspector Sujit Kumar Mohanta in Sambalpur on Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 to settle a case, according to ANI.
The arrest occurred on November 5 when the accused allegedly accepted the money. During the attempt to flee, Mohanta jumped into a pond and threw the tainted currency notes into the water.
Odisha Vigilance SP Pradyumna Kumar Dwivedi told ANI that a team member jumped into the pond to apprehend the individual and recover the notes. A chemical test confirmed contact with the treated currency after the water turned red upon examining his hands and bag.
Officials conducted a search of the accused's room at the police station and recovered an additional Rs 1,55,700 in cash. Dwivedi stated that Mohanta could not provide an explanation for the source of this money, which was also seized.
