Seven killed as speeding truck runs over crowd in Jharkhand

The victims, including three children and three women, were gathered to help a scooter rider who had fallen into a ditch.

Seven people, including three children, were killed and one person was injured after an 18-wheel truck ran over a crowd in Jharkhand's Khunti district on Thursday night, according to reports by The New Indian Express and Times Now.

The incident occurred on the Karra-Torpa main road within the Karra police station limits. A group of people, including women and children, had assembled at the spot to assist a scooter rider who had fallen into a ditch.

Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishabh Garg told PTI that the truck was coming from Torpa and ran over the people while negotiating a sharp bend. Garg said the driver might not have noticed the crowd due to darkness.

Six people died on the spot, while one person died during hospital treatment, the SP said. The deceased included three women, three children, and one man.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed grief over the deaths on X, stating that the news of the accident in Karra had deeply saddened him and praying for the families of the departed souls.
