People now want instant justice, says former Assam DGP

Former Director General of Assam Police GM Srivastava noted a shift where citizens demand encounters for accused individuals following heinous crimes.

A section of people in Assam is increasingly demanding the instant killing of accused individuals following heinous crimes, according to The Assam Tribune.

Former Director General of Assam Police (DGP) GM Srivastava said that the mindset of a section of people is changing. He noted that while people previously demanded justice for crimes like murder or rape, they now demand encounters.

Srivastava said the value system in society has changed, making people unwilling to wait for the judicial process. He noted that investigations require filing chargesheets within 90 days, and the legal process involves trials and potential appeals to the High Court, Supreme Court, or mercy petitions to the President of India.

Dr Suresh Chakravarty, head of the Psychiatry Department at Gauhati Medical College, said the value system has changed and most people lack patience. He compared the desire for instant justice to the use of apps like ChatGPT to write essays quickly.

Dr Chakravarty added that delays in the judicial process and criminals escaping abroad with money are reasons for these demands. He described the trend as dangerous and stated that all four pillars of democracy must work together to strengthen democratic systems and change this mindset.
