Suvarna Raj thanks Delhi CM and LG over new appointment
The para-athlete expressed gratitude to Rekha Gupta and Taranjit Singh Sandhu following her selection as State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.
Para-athlete Suvarna Raj expressed her gratitude to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday for announcing her appointment as the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities for Delhi, according to ANI.
The selection followed Raj's gold medal win in the women's discus throw F54 event at the Asian Para Games 2026. The LG finalised the choice from a three-member panel recommended by a Search-cum-Selection Committee after reviewing meeting minutes and candidate records.
Speaking to the media after an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi, Raj said she intends to create fresh opportunities for people with disabilities during her three-year term.
She noted that while she has not yet received an official appointment letter, the LG had announced the decision on October 23, one day after her medal win on October 22.
Raj also described her meeting with the Prime Minister as an encouraging experience that bolsters the determination of athletes. She mentioned that she informed the Prime Minister about her involvement with the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan).
The para-athlete expressed her hope that India can climb from its current fourth-place ranking to the top spot at the Asian Para Games over the coming decade.
