Tanvi Patri wins silver in Youth Olympics badminton final

The 15-year-old Odisha teenager became the first Indian woman to reach the badminton final at the Youth Olympic Games.

Tanvi Patri secured a silver medal in the badminton singles final at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar on Thursday. According to India Today, the 15-year-old from Odisha lost a three-game contest to China's Zhang Yi Xin with scores of 15-21, 21-13, and 26-24.

Patri staged a comeback in the deciding game, saving five match points after trailing 10-19. However, she could not convert three match points of her own before Zhang clinched the gold.

The performance makes Patri the first Indian woman to reach the badminton final at the Youth Olympic Games. She previously became the first Indian woman to reach the semi-finals at this event after defeating Thailand's Kungkaew Kakanik.

India has won four medals at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games so far. These include two silver medals from Patri and Khushbu Rajakbhai Darjada in women's 63kg judo, and two bronze medals from Dhinidhi Desinghu in women's 100m freestyle swimming and Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu in women's Changquan-Gunshu combined wushu.
