Tea growers demand action against Tinsukia factory over quality violations
The All Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association has petitioned the Tea Board of India regarding alleged substandard tea production in Tinsukia.
The All Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association has approached the Tea Board of India to seek punishment for the Pengeri Garh tea factory in Tinsukia district. According to The Assam Tribune, the association alleges the factory is processing substandard green tea leaves and violating food safety regulations.
General Secretary Jagat Handique signed a memorandum submitted to the Chief Executive Director of the Tea Board’s North Eastern Zonal Office in Guwahati. The document claims the factory is producing low-grade tea in violation of the Tea Marketing Control Order (TMCO), 2003, and Tea Board regulations.
The association alleged that the manufactured tea is unfit for human consumption and poses a threat to public health. They further claimed these activities damage the reputation of the Assam tea industry.
The group has requested that the factory's alleged illegal production be stopped immediately. They also urged the Tea Board to improve monitoring by checking monthly returns, tea waste licences, and stock records from Assam factories.
The association demanded that the Tea Board ensure all manufacturing units follow food safety standards. They stated they would not be responsible for any future undesirable situations if these alleged activities continue without intervention.
