Security forces on high alert in Kashmir as terrorists remain mobile
Inspector General of Police Sujit Kumar said the exact number of active terrorists cannot be determined due to their constant movement.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone Sujit Kumar said on Thursday that security forces are on high alert to manage threats from terrorist groups in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at the Police Control Room in Srinagar, Kumar noted that the precise number of terrorists in the Valley is difficult to ascertain because they are constantly moving.
According to the Kashmir Observer, Kumar stated that one prominent local terrorist has orchestrated attacks in Anantnag and Kulgam with support from foreign terrorists. He added that while footprints have been observed, providing a definitive count is not feasible as they move between locations.
The IGP highlighted the narco-terror nexus as a major challenge, stating that much of the narcotics trade is used to fund terrorist activities. He said local and cross-border kingpins use networks of overground workers to distribute illicit earnings.
Regarding drug enforcement, Kumar said police have registered more than 1,500 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act this year. Nearly 2,000 people have been arrested, and police have frozen 567 bank accounts linked to drug activities involving approximately Rs 1.31 crore.
Kumar also addressed cyber fraud, noting that recent complaints involved losses exceeding Rs 54 crore. He said that around 13 to 14 per cent of the defrauded amount has been recovered, with more than Rs 7 crore returned to victims.
The 2007-batch IPS officer urged youngsters to avoid drugs, cybercrime, and reckless driving. He assured that the identities of informants reporting drug peddling would be kept confidential.
