Tamil Nadu: Dry Cauvery prompts calls for Mettur water release

Social activist Appar Sundaram has urged the government to release water before the Kadai Muga Theerthavari festival on November 16.

The dry state of the Cauvery river has raised concerns among residents and devotees ahead of the Kadai Muga Theerthavari festival, according to ANI. The festival is scheduled for November 16 at the Cauvery Tula Ghat in Mayiladuthurai.

Thousands of devotees are expected to visit Mayiladuthurai to take a holy dip during the Aippasi festival. The annual event includes a ceremonial procession of deities from temples including Mayuranathaswamy, Ayyarappar and Vadhanyeswarar to the riverbanks.

Social activist Appar Sundaram stated that the Cauvery River is in a severely depleted condition because of low water levels in the Mettur Dam. He noted that water usually flows into the river during this period.

Sundaram urged the Tamil Nadu government to release water from the Mettur Dam well in advance to facilitate the celebrations. He said the absence of water could affect thousands of devotees who travel long distances for the holy dip.

The activist appealed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to take steps to ensure the festival is conducted in a grand manner. He stressed that timely intervention is essential to protect the traditional significance of the event and prevent disappointment among pilgrims.
