Suvendu Adhikari urges ABVP to clean up Presidency and Jadavpur universities
The West Bengal Chief Minister accused certain student groups of promoting anti-national sentiments at the two state-run institutions.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday urged the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to conduct a 'clean-up' drive at Presidency University and Jadavpur University in Kolkata. According to The New Indian Express, Adhikari accused certain student groups at the universities of raising slogans such as 'Kashmir mange azaadi' and 'tukde-tukde gang'.
Addressing a gathering at a Kali Puja pandal unveiling in Maniktala, Adhikari described those involved as 'cockroaches', 'bedbugs' and 'dimagi naxals'. He congratulated the ABVP for taking up the task of removing those who promote anti-national sentiments. The Chief Minister offered to supply bleaching powder and phenyl for the proposed drive.
Separately, a university official said on Saturday that Presidency University has expelled two female students. The students allegedly wrote abusive remarks on a poster featuring Swami Vivekananda's photograph and used derogatory language against other organisations.
The expulsion followed an inquiry committee's examination of CCTV footage and consultations with stakeholders. The two students are barred from further academic activities and are ineligible for future degree programmes at the university.
The controversy began after the ABVP alleged that a poster of Swami Vivekananda, put up on campus on October 13, was defaced. The organisation lodged a police complaint and staged a protest outside the university gate. The Students' Federation of India (SFI) denied any involvement in the incident.
