Mamata Banerjee protests after alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee's house
The former West Bengal chief minister accused the BJP and police of targeting her nephew's residence in Kolkata during the early hours of Saturday.
Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee staged a protest outside the Kolkata residence of her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, on Saturday. She alleged that his home in the Kalighat area was targeted in a pre-planned attack around 2 am or 3 am.
According to reports from The Times of India, Banerjee accused the BJP and the police of intimidating political opponents. She claimed the attackers arrived during Kali Puja celebrations and suggested the targeting was due to the Trinamool Congress's association with the INDIA bloc.
Abhishek Banerjee, the Diamond Harbour MP, alleged that BJP-backed miscreants attacked his house following two days of surveillance. He stated this was the seventh attempt on his life in the last six months and claimed the attack continued until 7 am.
The MP further alleged that some police officers acted as silent spectators while others were beaten when they tried to stop the goons. He also cited crime figures, stating that between May and October, the state reported around 2,500 rapes, 600 murders, and more than 32,000 other crimes.
Banerjee also alleged that authorities disrupted traditional Kali Puja celebrations by blocking lanes and allowing a newly organised puja to be set up on the main road. She said she might approach the Supreme Court regarding the lawlessness in the state.
Following confrontations between police and supporters, Banerjee appealed for peace and urged party workers not to be provoked. She warned that if access to the residence remained restricted, she would perform Kali Puja in front of the Kalighat temple.
