Police shoot murder accused in Vijayapura and Sivasagar
Two separate incidents involving accused individuals in police encounters have been reported in Karnataka and Assam.
Police shot and arrested Sameer Mulla, the prime accused in the murder of Yaseen Zuberi, in Vijayapura on Saturday, according to reports by The Hindu and Hindustan Times. Mulla allegedly pointed a country-made pistol at a police team and attempted to flee during an arrest attempt.
Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbargi said Mulla was shot in the right leg after he resisted warnings. The injured accused was admitted to a district hospital, and a policeman was also injured during the scuffle, though both are in stable condition.
The investigation into the murder of Zuberi, who was shot outside Mundewadi Hospital on November 5, suggests the crime was linked to a dispute over prestige during an Urus festival on October 18. Nimbargi stated that four people have been arrested and efforts are underway to apprehend two other suspects involved in the killing.
In a separate incident in Sivasagar, Assam, Ghanakanta Gogoi was killed in a police encounter on Wednesday, according to The Indian Express. Gogoi, 34, was the prime accused in a shooting that killed five people at a Guwahati hotel on October 26.
Sivasagar SSP Papori Chetia said Gogoi was being transported to Sivsagar when he requested a bathroom break and allegedly attempted to snatch a service pistol from an investigating officer. During the scuffle, three rounds were fired, and a protective officer fired back to prevent further assault.
Gogoi succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital. Preliminary investigations into the Guwahati hotel shooting suggest the incident stemmed from a property dispute between the hotel owners and the leaseholder.
