Mohammed Shami retires from Test cricket to continue playing white-ball formats

The 36-year-old fast bowler ends a 12-year career with 229 wickets in 64 matches.

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday, according to reports by The Times of India and The Hindu. The 36-year-old pacer, who has been out of the Indian team since the 2025 Champions Trophy, confirmed his decision through an Instagram post.

Shami stated that while he is leaving the white jersey, he intends to continue playing white-ball cricket. He said that Test cricket was a very special part of his life and that he was making the decision with a heavy heart and unlimited beautiful memories.

The pacer made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 6, 2013. He finished his career with 229 wickets in 64 matches at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls.

Shami's final Test appearance was during the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. His career included notable performances in South Africa, such as a 5/28 spell in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test during the 2018 tour.

Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary paid tribute to Shami on X, describing him as a warrior at heart. Tiwary noted that while the red ball may no longer be in Shami's hands, the memories of his performances would remain with cricket lovers.
