Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the implementation of the initiative to improve technological skills and employability.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the implementation of the ₹2,000-crore Vetri Laptop Scheme to provide digital tools to college students, according to BusinessLine and Free Press Journal.

The initiative, which was announced in the 2026-27 State Budget, aims to help students from lower- and middle-income families access digital learning and skill development resources.

The scheme covers first- and second-year undergraduate and diploma students in government and government-aided colleges during the 2026-27 academic year. Eligible courses include Arts, Science, Engineering, Polytechnic, ITI, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Fisheries, Agriculture, and Law.

Additionally, third- and fourth-year professional course students in government or state-aided institutions who did not receive laptops during 2025-26 will also be eligible.

Engineering students will receive high-end laptops featuring Intel Core i5 processors or equivalent technology to meet higher computing needs.

A high-level steering committee led by the Chief Minister will oversee the programme. The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has received administrative approval to manage the procurement of quality-standard laptops.
