Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026-27

The 15-year-old cricketer will lead the state side in their opening matches before joining the India A squad for the Emerging Asia Cup.

The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has appointed 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the captain of the Bihar team for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Sooryavanshi is set to lead the side in their opening matches against Saurashtra on November 14 and Railways on November 16 in Indore.

According to reports from The Indian Express and Times Now, Sooryavanshi will only be available for the first two games. He is scheduled to travel to Doha on November 16 to join the Tilak Varma-led India A squad for the Emerging Asia Cup, which runs from November 19 to November 29.

In his absence, Suraj Kashyap will serve as vice-captain and lead the team. BCA President Harsh Vardhan said the captaincy would provide Sooryavanshi with an opportunity to develop as a leader, noting that the player has demonstrated talent and maturity at a young age.

Sooryavanshi's appointment makes him the youngest captain of a T20 team in world cricket. He recently played in the T20I series against New Zealand and previously served as vice-captain for the East Zone team during the Duleep Trophy.

The Bihar squad includes Alok Kumar, Ayush Loharuka, Altamash Ashraf, Param Kumar Singh, Anmol Kumar, Ritwik Raj, Mayank Kumar, Raghavendra Pratap, Ashish Kumar, Vasudev Pratap Singh, Mohammad Izhar, Amod Yadav, Prashant Singh, Nawaz Khan, and Himanshu Singh. All-rounder Mangal Mahour and pacer Shakib Hussain have been included subject to fitness.
