Eight more arrested for attack on BSF personnel in Tripura
The total number of arrests in connection with the November 2 incident in Sepahijala district has risen to 18.
Police officials said on Friday that eight more people have been arrested for the alleged attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Tripura's Sepahijala district. This brings the total number of arrests to 18, including three women, according to Telangana Today.
The fresh arrests were made from various parts of Sepahijala district on Thursday night and early Friday morning. The incident occurred on November 2 at Ashabari village, under the Kalamchaura police station, along the India-Bangladesh international border.
The attack reportedly happened when BSF personnel intercepted a group of alleged smugglers attempting to transport ganja across the border. A mob of approximately 50 men and women allegedly surrounded the personnel, leaving an assistant commandant and two others injured. The attackers also allegedly damaged a BSF vehicle and attempted to snatch a pump-action gun from a personnel, according to The New Indian Express and Telangana Today.
All 18 accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
Chief Minister Manik Saha chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday night with officials from the state administration, police, BSF, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Rifles to review the security situation. Saha directed authorities to ensure strict legal action and adopt zero tolerance towards cross-border smuggling.
The eight newly arrested individuals will be produced before a local court in Sepahijala district at the earliest. An intensive search operation is still underway to apprehend the remaining accused, a senior police official told IANS.
