Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Assam receive additional PG medical seats

The National Medical Commission has approved more postgraduate medical seats for the 2026–27 academic year in three states.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats for the 2026–27 academic year in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Assam, according to reports by Deccan Chronicle, The Hindu and The News Mill.

In Andhra Pradesh, the total number of PG seats has increased from 3,772 to 4,196. The 424 new seats are distributed among 18 government and 18 private medical colleges. Government sector seats rose by 162 to a total of 2,077, while private sector seats increased by 262 to 2,119.

Telangana has secured 359 additional PG seats in government medical colleges, raising the total to 1,625. This expansion includes 13 government colleges that will begin offering PG courses for the first time. The state also received approval for 107 additional seats at Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and 106 at the ESIC Medical College, Sanath Nagar.

Assam has been granted 43 additional PG seats at Lakhimpur Medical College and Diphu Medical College. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on November 6 that these seats cover seven clinical disciplines, bringing the state's total to 839.

In Telangana, the NMC has directed colleges to submit electronic bank guarantees within seven days of its November 6 notice to receive formal permission for the increased intake. Admissions must follow the latest notified seat matrix to avoid regulatory violations under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
