Leonora Carrington painting held by one family for 70 years to be auctioned

The 1953 artwork Fil d’Or is expected to fetch between $250,000 and $350,000 at an upcoming auction.

A 1953 painting by Leonora Carrington, titled Fil d’Or, is set to go up for auction on November 10, 2026, according to a report by The Times of India. The artwork has remained within a single family for more than seven decades.

The painting was originally purchased from the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in Mexico City in 1953. It was acquired by a private collector in Long Beach, California, and was later passed down to the current owner in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Measuring 13 by 8.5 inches, the piece was created using the grattage technique. This Surrealist method involves applying layers of paint and scraping them away to create specific textures and patterns.

The auction catalogue states that Carrington chose the title, which means 'gold thread' in French, to examine how different people might interpret the same subject in various ways.

Heritage Auctions will offer the work as part of its Modern & Contemporary Art Signature Auction. The painting carries an estimated value of $250,000 to $350,000.
