Three family members including newborn die in Kanpur house roof collapse

A 20-day-old baby and two others died after a mud room roof collapsed in the Panki Padaav area on Sunday.

Three members of a family, including a 20-day-old baby, died when a house roof collapsed in the Panki Padaav area of Kanpur on Sunday morning, according to The Times of India.

The victims were identified as Vinodni Shukla, 60, her daughter-in-law Anshika Shukla, 28, and Anshika's newborn son, Aarav. A fourth family member, Harsh Shukla, 32, survived the incident.

The collapse occurred in a mud room with bamboo supports. Neighbours and family members pulled the four individuals from the debris and took them to Kalyanpur CHC, where doctors declared three of them dead.

The 35-year-old single-storey ancestral house belongs to Avdhesh Shukla, 65. He and his son, Raju Shukla, 29, were in a different room when the accident happened.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) West SM Qasim Abidi said that prima facie, it appears the load on the roof increased due to water seepage. The Indian Express reported that police noted the roof was in a dilapidated condition with wooden beams placed to support the structure.

Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and a revenue team is at the spot. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the collapse.
