Democrats vow impeachment push for defence secretary Pete Hegseth

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has backed a resolution to impeach Pete Hegseth following midterm election victories.

US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has expressed support for efforts to impeach defence secretary Pete Hegseth, according to the Times of India. Jeffries accused Hegseth of abusing his power and engineering a war in Iran.

Speaking to ABC News on Sunday, Jeffries said he supports a resolution that Republican Representative Thomas Massie intends to introduce. Jeffries stated that Democrats will discuss the proposal when they reconvene on Tuesday.

Jeffries alleged that Hegseth undermined national security and created a costly war in Iran that increased prices for the American people. He said that Hegseth must leave his position.

Hegseth dismissed the impeachment attempt in a video, according to CNN, claiming the move is driven by personal politics and stating it would not work against him.

Following midterm victories, Democrats are preparing wider investigations into the Trump administration. Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, said he is preparing inquiries into the Trump family.

President Donald Trump described the requests for investigations as extortion, while Attorney General Todd Blanche warned that criminal investigations of Democrats are possible. Senator-elect Adam Hamilton and Senator Bernie Sanders suggested that the party should focus on setting guardrails and helping working-class families instead of focusing solely on investigations.
