Diwali celebrations take place across India and global diaspora

The festival of lights is being observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists on November 8.

People across India and the global diaspora are celebrating Diwali, a major festival for Hindus, according to Al Jazeera. The celebrations involve prayers, family gatherings, and the lighting of fireworks.

The festival, which falls on November 8 this year, follows the Hindu lunar calendar. It is typically observed in late October or early November.

While rooted in Hindu tradition, the festival is also observed by Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. These groups share regional origin stories centered on the theme of good triumphing over evil.

Many families mark the occasion by placing clay oil lamps outside their houses to represent the victory of knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness.

Common traditions during the celebrations include wearing new clothes, creating rangoli floor designs, feasting, and exchanging gifts and sweets with neighbours and friends.
