Swiss pair wins Chennai Open WTA 250 doubles title
Simona Waltert and Naima Karamoko defeated the all-Indian duo of Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale in the final.
Swiss players Simona Waltert and Naima Karamoko won the Chennai Open WTA 250 doubles title on Sunday by defeating the Indian pair Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale. The match, held at the SDAT Tennis Stadium, ended with a 6-2, 6-0 victory for the Swiss duo.
According to The New Indian Express, Karamoko was a standout performer during the final, using interceptions to gain points against the Indian players. Karamoko, who is 29 years old, stated that she decided to play only doubles less than two years ago after previously playing singles.
Karamoko, who is ranked 99th in the WTA doubles rankings, said her next goal is to make regular appearances at the Grand Slams. She noted that reaching the Top 100 was her first goal, which she has now achieved.
The doubles final took place amidst overcast skies and rain in Chennai. Karamoko also recalled being 11 years old when she attended a camp run by Zacharie, the father of Yannick Noah, to learn tennis techniques.
Separately, the singles final between Indonesian top seed Janice Tjen and Polish third seed Magda Linette was postponed due to rain and poor air quality. The final, originally scheduled for 6.30 pm on Sunday, has been moved to 11 am on Monday.
