Bengaluru Central Prison declared free of prohibited items
Six inmates received a 30-day sentence remission for their performance in a theatrical production staged inside the facility.
The Bengaluru Central Prison has been officially declared a prohibited items-free prison, according to The Hindu. This follows surprise inspections that reportedly found no mobile phones, ganja, or tobacco products on the premises.
Director-General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar made the announcement during the 71st Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations held at the prison. During the event, Kumar granted a 30-day special remission to six convicted prisoners.
The inmates receiving the remission are Rajesh, Suresh K., Muniraju, Hanumantharaju, Maruti, and Thimmarayappa. They were recognised for their exceptional performance in a three-hour play staged on November 1, 2026.
Prison authorities also announced new privileges for inmates who maintain good conduct. Prisoners who refrain from using prohibited items and do not violate rules for one year will receive canteen facilities and four special visits annually for occasions like birthdays or wedding anniversaries.
The celebrations included the planting of 1,956 saplings and cultural programmes under the ‘Unboxing Bengaluru’ initiative. A theatrical production titled Raja Satyavrata or Shani Prabhava, involving 23 inmates, was also performed.
Prison officials stated that such cultural activities support rehabilitation by helping inmates develop discipline, teamwork, and positive thinking. The department also organised the first-ever State-level Prison Sports Meet-2026.
