Finance Minister urges Tata Group to resolve internal disputes amicably
Nirmala Sitharaman called for the settlement of disagreements regarding Tata Sons' leadership and potential stock market listing.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday urged the Tata Group to settle its internal disagreements through discussion to restore normalcy. Speaking at the Financial Express Leadership Awards in Mumbai, Sitharaman said the parties involved should resolve the matter privately rather than in public, according to Moneycontrol.
The conglomerate is facing a dispute involving the reappointment of Chairman N Chandrasekaran and whether its holding company, Tata Sons, should undergo a public listing. The disagreement involves the relationship between Tata Sons and its controlling shareholder, Tata Trusts.
The conflict intensified after a September 17 board meeting of Tata Sons approved a new five-year term for Chandrasekaran and began steps toward a listing. Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata opposed these moves, which highlighted divisions between the board and the principal shareholder.
Tata Sons was identified as an upper-layer non-banking financial company (NBFC) by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in September 2022. While Tata Sons attempted to surrender its registration, the RBI rejected the application, bringing the requirement to list within three years back into focus.
Sitharaman noted that the Tata brand is a critical component of the Indian economy and described the situation as a delicate matter involving significant commercial interests. She added that the leadership should demonstrate maturity by settling the scene sooner.
The Finance Minister also criticised the Congress party for politicising the issue. She responded to comments by Rahul Gandhi, who had accused the government of treating Indian businesses as a plaything.
