Senior advocate Darius Khambata declines reappointment as Tata Trusts trustee
Khambata cited the need to maintain his independence following disagreements over the governance and ownership structure of Tata Sons.
Senior advocate Darius Khambata has declined reappointment as a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, according to a report by Times Now.
In a letter dated November 2 addressed to Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and chief executive Siddharth Sharma, Khambata stated he did not wish to seek reappointment despite their expressed desire for him to continue.
Khambata said he accepted his original appointments at the invitation of the late Ratan Tata and wished to maintain his independence as a trustee.
He noted that his approach has at times differed from others, including Noel Tata, and stated that seeking reappointment would compromise his independence.
The advocate argued that the Tata group's ownership structure is integral to its identity and cautioned against the potential listing of Tata Sons.
Khambata described the Tata model as a manifestation of Mahatma Gandhiji’s trusteeship doctrine, where the industrial and philanthropic components are linked.
