Arunachal Pradesh and Assam hold talks to resolve boundary dispute

Regional Committee members met in Roing to discuss border issues between Lower Dibang Valley and Tinsukia districts.

Arunachal Pradesh and Assam held a Regional Committee meeting on Monday to discuss long-standing inter-state boundary issues, according to The Sentinel and The Pioneer. The discussions focused on the dispute between the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh and the Tinsukia district of Assam.

The meeting took place at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Roing. It was led by Arunachal Pradesh Regional Committee chairman and Minister Ojing Tasing, alongside Assam Minister and Tinsukia Regional Committee chairman Atul Bora.

Tasing stated on X that the talks aimed to address boundary differences while protecting the rights and interests of communities living in the adjoining areas. He noted that both states share historical, cultural, and social ties that should not be undermined by these differences.

The two states are using Regional Committees for institutional-level discussions to reach a settlement. This follows the Namsai Declaration signed on July 15, 2022, which sought to reduce disputed border villages from 123 to 86 through joint verification.

The states share an 804.1 km-long border, with parts of it remaining under dispute. While a tripartite committee recommended certain territory transfers after Arunachal Pradesh achieved statehood in 1987, the matter remains pending before the Supreme Court.
