Telangana CM directs officials to coordinate with Maharashtra on Tummidihatti barrage
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has offered to deposit compensation funds into a joint account to resolve the proposed Pranahita river project.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed irrigation officials to maintain close coordination and ongoing dialogue with the Maharashtra government regarding the proposed Tummidihatti barrage on the Pranahita river, according to reports by Deccan Chronicle and The News Mill.
During a review meeting at his Jubilee Hills residence on Tuesday, the Chief Minister asked officials to provide comprehensive details on the project. This includes the amount of land in Maharashtra likely to be submerged and the exchange of all relevant documents and existing agreements.
Revanth Reddy stated that Telangana is ready to provide fair payment for any land in Maharashtra impacted by the project. He added that the state is willing to place these funds into a joint account managed by both state governments.
The Chief Minister also noted that Telangana would not oppose Maharashtra performing an independent survey to determine the extent of land submergence. He directed officials to supply all information requested by Maharashtra without delay to prepare for future discussions.
The discussions follow an October 26 meeting in Mumbai between Revanth Reddy and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Telangana has requested to build the barrage at a height of 152 metres, compared to the 148-metre height agreed upon in 2016, to improve irrigation in the erstwhile Adilabad district.
Fadnavis has proposed a joint committee led by the principal secretaries of the irrigation departments of both states to study the barrage height, technical feasibility, and compensation. Officials estimate a 152-metre structure could submerge approximately 2,300 acres in Maharashtra.
