Karnataka CM asks KMF to cut Nandini curd prices by Rs 2
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar suggested the price reduction following public backlash and opposition criticism over recent dairy price hikes.
Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Monday that the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has agreed to lower Nandini curd prices by Rs 2 per litre. According to reports from India Today, the suggestion was made to KMF office-bearers during a meeting at the Chief Minister's residence.
The decision follows a price increase of up to Rs 14 per kg that took effect on November 1. Under the previous rates, a 500-gram curd pouch cost Rs 28 and a one-kg pouch cost Rs 54, while the new prices are Rs 34 and Rs 68 respectively.
The price revision drew criticism from the BJP and the Bangalore Hotels Association, who described the increase as excessive. The BJP women's wing also staged a demonstration at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Monday to demand a rollback.
Defending the milk price hike, Shivakumar stated that the revision would benefit 11 lakh farmer families across the state. He noted that milk with higher fat content is priced higher and said officials would provide further explanations regarding specific price differences.
BAMUL president and DK Suresh said the state's daily milk production is 1.15 crore litres. He added that the price increase would support 25 lakh milk sellers and noted that milk is supplied to states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
