Lawyers protest in Kalaburagi seeking stronger protection law
The Gulbarga Bar Association submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding stringent measures to prevent attacks and harassment of advocates.
Members of the Gulbarga Bar Association staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kalaburagi on Tuesday. According to The Hindu, the group submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding the strengthening of the Advocates Protection Act.
The association expressed concern regarding increasing instances of threats, attacks, and atrocities against advocates. They stated that the lack of adequate security makes it difficult for them to perform professional responsibilities without fear.
The agitating lawyers urged the State government to make the harassment, intimidation, and murder of advocates non-bailable offences. They also requested stringent imprisonment and heavy penalties for those found guilty.
The association sought the establishment of special courts to ensure the speedy trial of cases involving attacks on advocates within a stipulated timeframe. They also demanded the installation of CCTV cameras and metal detectors at all court premises across the State.
The group urged the government to expedite measures to implement the Advocates Protection Act. Association president S.V. Pasar, vice-president Ananth Jahagirdar, treasurer Manjunath Ginni, and joint secretary Rekha Patil were present during the protest.
