Kozhikode Corporation launches Nirmalam campaign for waste management transformation

The cleaning drive aims to improve sanitation through public participation and will be executed in three distinct stages.

The Kozhikode Corporation has started a cleaning drive under the State government’s ‘Nirmalam - Puthuyuga Suchitwa Keralam’ campaign, according to The Hindu.

Mayor O. Sadasivan inaugurated the local level initiative on Tuesday by taking part in a cleaning activity at the district court premises.

The programme intends to overhaul sanitation and waste management between October 2026 and March 30, 2031. It will operate through immediate, intermediate, and extended phases to meet targets by the International Day of Zero Waste.

Short-term tasks are scheduled from October 2026 to October 2, 2027, while the medium-term period spans from October 2, 2027, to June 5, 2030. The final phase will focus on long-term sustainable improvements.

Officials stated that the Corporation held a special council meeting and will form Nirmalam Shuchitwa Keralam committees in every ward. The drive will cover households, schools, markets, bus stations, and tourist spots, alongside cleaning waterbodies.

The Corporation plans to increase enforcement against illegal dumping and promote awareness. Deputy Mayor S. Jayasree presided over the launch.
