Sugarcane farmers protest in Shivamogga for remunerative pricing
Protesters submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding a fixed price of ₹5,500 per tonne for sugarcane.
Sugarcane growers staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shivamogga on Tuesday, November 3. The protesters, organised under the State Sugarcane Growers’ Coordination Committee, called on the State government to establish a remunerative price for the crop.
According to The Hindu, the farmers submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister. They requested that both the Union and State governments stop shifting blame to one another and set the price at ₹5,500 per tonne.
The protesters noted that growers in North Karnataka have been agitating for over a month. They stated that previous discussions regarding pricing between the government, factory owners, and the coordination committee have failed.
The farmers also urged factories to start crushing immediately. They said the crop is drying in fields due to an unprecedented drought and demanded that the government provide aid to drought-hit farmers on a war footing.
The protest was led by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha leaders Raghavendra, Jagadish, and T.M. Chandrappa.
