KSPCA seeks state-wide crackdown on banned Chinese manja sale and use

The Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority has urged the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police to take action against synthetic kite strings.

The Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority (KSPCA) has written to the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police (DG&IGP), Karnataka Police, requesting a state-wide crackdown on the illegal storage, sale, and use of banned Chinese manja, according to The Hindu.

The request follows the death of Vidya Manjunath Gowdar in Hubballi, who sustained fatal injuries when a manja string became entangled around her neck while she was riding a scooter.

KSPCA member Mohan Kumar Danappa has asked the DGP to instruct all police units in Karnataka to conduct special enforcement drives. He suggested that raids be carried out on warehouses, toy shops, and kite shops to find and confiscate prohibited stocks.

Danappa also called for legal action against individuals using the strings, stockists, and traders selling synthetic manja, including those using online platforms to facilitate sales. He requested that police register cases under relevant laws against violators.

The KSPCA has further proposed a public awareness campaign using radio, television, newspapers, and social media to inform people of the legal penalties and dangers of synthetic manja.

The letter has requested the DGP to provide instructions to all police unit heads to ensure the ban is strictly enforced throughout the state.
