Punjabi singer earns daily profit selling saag from family farm

Gurmukh Singh, known as Garry Benipal, sells 125 packets of saag daily at Mata Modi Chowk in Sunam.

Punjabi singer Gurmukh Singh, popularly known as Garry Benipal, is selling approximately 125 packets of freshly cooked saag every day at Mata Modi Chowk in Sunam, according to reports by The Times of India and The Indian Express.

The 33-year-old singer, who hails from Ghasiwala village in the Sangrur district, describes himself as a "Kisan Kalakaar" or farmer-artist. He uses leafy greens grown on his family's three-acre farm, including mustard leaves, spinach, and fenugreek, to prepare the traditional winter dish.

Benipal stated that he initially felt hesitant to sell vegetables by the roadside because people recognised him as a singer. However, after an initial attempt to sell raw vegetables was not encouraging, he began cooking the produce. His first batch of 15 packets sold out within 10 minutes.

Each 500-gram packet is priced at Rs 100. With 125 packets sold daily, the total sales amount to approximately Rs 12,500, which leaves him with a daily profit of around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000.

The singer has also started selling in Sangrur and has received enquiries from Ludhiana. He plans to continue selling saag until February before moving to other seasonal products, such as mixed dal, which he sells in 500-gram containers for Rs 150.
