Mysuru group urges authorities to stop railway construction near old school
The Mysore Grahakara Parishat has requested the Mysuru City Corporation to issue a stop-work notice regarding construction adjacent to a school.
The Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has urged the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to issue a stop-work notice to the Railways over construction near the 118-year-old Government High School at Vontikoppal, according to The Hindu.
MGP president Roy Joseph wrote to MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha seeking a written direction to the Railways to suspend construction of staff quarters and other buildings until approvals are obtained from the MCC, Mysuru Development Authority (MDA), and other authorities.
The school was established in 1908 and currently has around 120 students. While the Railways had halted work in July 2026 after Regional Commissioner Nitesh Patil directed a stoppage, the MGP stated that construction resumed last week.
The Railways has reportedly invoked Section 11 of the Railways Act to contend that such approvals are not necessary. However, the MGP maintains that the exemption applies only to essential infrastructure like railway lines, bridges, and stations, rather than staff quarters.
In a letter dated October 31, the MGP cited court rulings stating the Railways must comply with State planning and municipal laws. The group has requested the MCC Commissioner to issue a written order to the Railways and the school's headmaster to suspend work until clearances are secured.
Mr. Joseph said the intervention is necessary to ensure compliance with regulations and to safeguard the interests of the school and its students.
