Maulana Ahsan al Hamoumi suggested that masjids can recharge groundwater by collecting water used during ablutions instead of letting it enter sewage systems.
Islamic scholar and Shahi Masjid khateeb Maulana Ahsan al Hamoumi has called for masjids in Telangana to construct used water harvesting systems, according to The Hindu.
The suggestion comes as the State government warns of the effects of El Nino, including rainfall deficits and a paucity of rains.
Maulana al Hamoumi stated that while worshippers use water for ablutions before congregational prayers, this water can be directed into specific structures to recharge groundwater levels.
He noted that the Shahi Masjid in Public Gardens already maintains both rainwater and used water harvesting pits.
The imam said that 20 per cent to 30 per cent of worshippers wash their hands, face, and feet during ablutions, and this water could be diverted from the sewage system.
He added that masjid management would not need to worry about water filtration as it is a natural phenomenon.
