₹146 crore sanctioned for development of 13 mining-affected camps in Vijayanagara district
Karnataka State Commission for Women Chairperson Nagalakshmi Choudhary announced that house construction and infrastructure works will begin in December.
Karnataka State Commission for Women Chairperson Nagalakshmi Choudhary has announced that development works, including house construction, will be undertaken in 13 mining-affected camps in Vijayanagara district at a cost of ₹146 crore. According to The Hindu, the works are scheduled to commence in December.
During a visit to Jambunathahalli, Dalmia camps, and other mining-affected areas, Ms. Choudhary inspected living conditions and interacted with residents. Residents reported that despite living in the 13 camps for 50 to 60 years, they lack proper housing, drainage, good roads, and adequate medical services.
The residents stated that although mining companies handed over private land to the district administration several years ago, the allotment of residential sites and construction of houses has not begun. They noted that makeshift houses become inundated during the rainy season and heat becomes difficult to manage during summer.
Ms. Choudhary said the State government has allocated ₹146 crore to ensure comprehensive development of the camps. She stated that the process of sanctioning residential sites and houses is complete and the objective is to provide essential infrastructure for a dignified life.
Urban Development Cell Project Director Manohar said a special job fair will be organised for unemployed youth from the 13 camps. Graduates and candidates with ITI, diploma, or engineering qualifications will be eligible, with priority given to those from mining-affected families.
Ms. Choudhary also directed officials to prevent the unauthorised use of community halls, such as the one in Kotreshwar Nagar, for private functions. She stated these facilities should be used exclusively for public welfare initiatives, training, and education.
