Tamil Nadu invites consultants for 25-year urban infrastructure development plans

The state government is seeking experts to identify civic gaps and create investment roadmaps for several urban local bodies under a World Bank-funded project.

The Tamil Nadu government has called for consultants to design 25-year city infrastructure development plans (CIDPs) for various urban local bodies, according to The New Indian Express.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) issued requests for proposals across five packages under the World Bank-funded Tamil Nadu Climate Resilient Urban Development Project.

This initiative is part of the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) 2026-2031 and aims to assess future civic requirements and create phased investment strategies.

The project covers municipal corporations including Chennai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, Sivakasi, Avadi, Tambaram, Cuddalore, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, and Hosur, as well as the Udhagamandalam special grade municipality.

Consultants will evaluate services such as water supply, sewerage, waste management, roads, schools, and public health through field inspections and GIS mapping. They will also study climate risks and disaster-prone areas.

The exercise will include population and service-demand projections for 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. The resulting plans will feature a rolling five-year capital investment plan with projects categorised into immediate, short-, medium-, and long-term interventions.
