Guwahati hotel shooting suspect killed in Assam police encounter

Ghanakanta Gogoi died in Sivasagar after allegedly attempting to seize a weapon from an officer during transit.

Ghanakanta Gogoi, the primary suspect in the October 26 mass shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati, was killed in a police encounter in Sivasagar district in the early hours of November 4, according to Mathrubhumi and The News Mill.

The 34-year-old was being moved by a Sivasagar police team in connection with a 2024 bank fraud case. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Papori Chetia stated that when the team reached Gaurisagar, Gogoi requested to step out of the vehicle to use the restroom. Upon exiting, he allegedly tried to take the service weapon from the investigating officer, leading to a struggle.

During the scuffle, a personal security officer fired a weapon to protect the senior officer, according to the SSP. Gogoi sustained gunshot wounds and was declared dead upon arrival at a medical facility. Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma, the investigating officer, sustained injuries to his right leg and is reported to be in stable condition.

The hotel shooting on October 26 resulted in five deaths, including four members of a business family. Ankita Bharali, daughter of deceased hotel co-owner Bhudev Bharali, said the news of Gogoi's death brought her family peace despite their grief.

The post-mortem examination of Gogoi will be conducted at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh instead of Sivasagar Civil Hospital, as reported by The Sentinel.
