Coimbatore: CCMC to test water samples after reports of discolouration

Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja has ordered officials to collect samples from three locations following resident complaints about yellowish drinking water.

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) will collect and test drinking water samples from three different locations following complaints of yellowish water in several parts of the city, according to The New Indian Express.

CCMC Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja instructed officials to gather samples from a reservoir or river, the headworks treatment plant, and a random residential unit in the North Zone. These samples are scheduled for collection on Wednesday to be sent to laboratories for testing.

Officials from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board stated that heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris district catchment areas of the Pillur Dam has increased turbidity. While residents under Pillur Scheme II have received clear water, discolouration was noted in areas under Pillur Scheme III and the Kavundampalayam-Vadavalli-Veerakeralam (KVV) scheme.

Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said the change in colour is due to turbidity rather than contamination. He noted that turbidity levels have dropped to less than 100 from 268.8 NTU last week and stated the water is safe to consume.

On Tuesday, some North Zone residents submitted a petition to the CCMC mayor and commissioner requesting clean and safe water. CCMC officials are expected to publish the laboratory test results and reports soon.
