Elephant carcass found in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district

The discovery marks the fourth elephant death reported across the state's forest regions in the last two months, according to The Assam Tribune.

A dead elephant was discovered in a field near Tankura village in West Singhbhum district on Wednesday. This incident brings the total number of elephant deaths reported in Jharkhand's forest areas to four over the past two months.

According to The Assam Tribune, a herd of approximately 20 elephants entered the Tankura settlement area on Tuesday evening. Local residents stated they contacted the Forest Department for help, but no officials arrived, forcing villagers to spend the night attempting to drive the herd away.

While the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, villagers suspect electrocution. Residents have called for an impartial investigation and questioned the response of the Forest Department.

Other recent incidents include an elephant found dead in Latehar district on October 28, which officials suspected died during a clash with another elephant. In early October, a female elephant was found dead in Bhangaon village with its tusks missing, leading to suspicions of poaching.

Reports indicate seven elephant deaths have been recorded in this region over the last year. On September 7, an elephant died in Komar village after contacting a live electric wire used for crop protection.

Elephant movement through villages bordering forests has increased in Jharkhand. Residents have been using methods to protect property, such as installing electric fencing that exceeds prescribed wattage limits or connects directly to AC mains.
