Floodwaters from Peddavagu project inundate farmlands in Andhra Pradesh
Agricultural lands in seven villages of Velairpad mandal were flooded after the Peddavagu project ring bund was breached on Wednesday.
Agricultural lands in several villages in the Velairpad mandal of Eluru district in Andhra Pradesh were inundated by floodwaters from the Peddavagu project on Wednesday, according to Telangana Today.
The project, located at Gummadavelli on the Telangana-Andhra Pradesh border, received inflows due to cyclonic rains in its catchment. By 6 pm on Wednesday, the mandal had received 27.8 cm of extremely heavy rainfall.
The floodwaters flowed over and further breached a damaged ring bund on the left side of the spillway. This resulted in the inundation of farmlands in approximately seven villages within the Velairpad mandal project ayacut.
The project has been defunct since it was breached in July 2024. A ring bund on the left side of the spillway had previously washed away in the first week of September 2024.
In other areas, Dammapet and Mulakalapalli mandals recorded very heavy rainfall of 18.8 cm and 14.9 cm respectively by 6 pm on Wednesday.
Andhra Pradesh officials have alerted residents and farmers in the mandal and asked them to move to safe places.
