Tripura leaders condemn attack on BSF personnel in Ashabari

Chief Minister Manik Saha and former CM Manik Sarkar have called for strict action following an assault on security forces.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar have condemned an attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in the Ashabari area of Boxanagar on Monday. The incident involved a clash between security forces and local residents, according to reports from ANI and The Sentinel.

The confrontation reportedly began following a dispute regarding alleged smuggling activities. The Sentinel reported that a BSF jawan allegedly struck a local resident, Hefzur Rahman, with a lathi, which led to villagers blocking the Boxanagar–Rahimpur road.

During the unrest, Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar and other BSF personnel were allegedly attacked. The News Mill reported that attackers tried to seize firearms from the injured jawans and vandalised a government vehicle.

Chief Minister Manik Saha described the assault as brutal and unacceptable, directing authorities to take stringent measures against the perpetrators. He stated on X that any attack on security personnel is a matter of grave concern.

Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said that if there were grievances against the BSF, people should have approached the police instead of taking the law into their own hands. He noted that the incident caused tension among local residents.

Police have registered a case against 19 people regarding the incident. While The Sentinel reported that eight people have been arrested, ANI stated that around 10 people, including two or three women, had been taken into custody.
